Genre=Action

Creator=Ashutosh Gowariker
Rating=6,5 / 10 stars
Abstract=The film is based on the third battle of Panipat which took place on the 14 of January in 1761 between the Marathas and the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali
Directed by=Ashutosh Gowariker
Ashutosh Gowariker's magnum opus 'Panipat' is based on historical facts, taking some creative liberties along the way. Shadashivrao Bhau (Arjun Kapoor) is an able commander in his cousin Nanasaheb Peshwa's (Mohnish Bahl) army. After a victorious battle against the Nizam of Udgir, Shadashivrao Bhau is chosen by the Maratha Peshwa to lead their army to Delhi. Ahmad Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt) the king of Afghanistan, has set his inroads into India after forming an alliance with Najib-Ud-Daula (Mantra) with the intention to defeat the Marathas and curb their expanding power.

2:27 best scene. bichare ke phodd diye😂😂😂😂😂😂. Panipat reviews. Updated: Saturday, December 7, 2019, 17:25 [IST] It's not the first time that a big-budget movie has gotten leaked online on its very first day of release. Earlier, films like Thugs of Hindostan, 2. 0, Zero, Manikarnika and Housefull 4 have been victims of online leaks. Today, Panipat released in theatres along with Pati Patni Aur Woh starring Kartik Aaryan and both films met with the same fate. While Pati Patni Aur Woh got leaked a bit early, Panipat got leaked quite later. The Arjun Kapoor starrer has received a mixed response from the audience as well as the critics. It would be interesting to see if the online leak would affect the business of the film. Panipat also casts Sanjay Dutt and Kriti Sanon and the film is directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Recently, while speaking to an entertainment portal, when Arjun Kapoor was asked what is his expectations from Panipat, the actor had said, That is an expectation which I can't even answer. I would want it to be a big success. Primarily because it deserves, i think this story deserves to be watched by maximum people and if it's entertaining then it will do well. In actor's life credibility matters which cannot be earned by box office numbers so I want people to like the film first and then it's film's destiny. Arjun will next be seen in Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar that also features Parineeti Chopra.

Panipat official trailer. Today I watched this movie its was amazing and fighting scenes awesome❤❣. Respect baba AHMED SHAH ABDALI IN film otherwise histry is enough for winners histry is near as said 💚MUHAMMED sslm💚. This is our real history! Liberals are crying blood tears! There could be a lot of historical facts added such as depiction of climbing with lizard but still well done Tanhaji team! Sinha/Lion (Tanaji) will always be remembered about his brave surgical strike. Panipat trailer reaction. Comedy Film. Wow kriti beautiful look 😘😍 really nice song 👌👌 jay Shivray. In 18th century India, Shadashivrao Bhau, commander-in-chief of the Maratha army, leads his force in the Third Battle of Panipat against Ahmad Shah Abdali, the king of Afghanistan.

Am I the only one who didnt laugh at all throughout the trailer. 😳Hw he became so polite today? Must b Sanju baba was shooting this video. Joining Shadashivrao Bhau and his army on this arduous thousand kilometer journey from Pune to Delhi are also his wife, Parvati Bai (Kriti Sanon) his nephew and the Peshwa heir - Vishwasrao (Abhishek Nigam) his cousin, Shamsher Bahadur (Sahil Salathia) and his trusted aide, Ibrahim Khan Gardi (Nawab Khan. As they traverse through the expanse, they form alliances with other kings to form a robust army to counter Ahmad Shah Abdali's one lakh soldiers. And almost mid-way they come face to face with Ahmad Shah Abdali's army, with only the raging waters of the Yamuna separating the armies.

Ballett Russland, 2018 150 min.

No other composer in history can conceptualize music the way Tchaikovsky did. There are many talented composer, but none quite so unique.

I agree that this dance was a highlight of the second act, but I also found that the entire corps was spectacular in the snow scene and opening party scene. The principal dancers were also great. I'm sorry the dancer who played the toy Nutcracker was not presented at the final least I didn't see her. This was a 2018 production I hope to see a new one next year. Swan lake is coming up within a few mo0nths and I may break down and watch that one. I love the music but have never seen the ballet.

Produktbeschreibungen A masterpiece of classical dance, and a Christmas favourite with audiences everywhere, this Nutcracker is a magical version of the score by Tchaikovsky filmed at the Bolshoi Theatre. Since its première in Saint-Petersburg in 1892, The Nutcracker has been one of the most successful classical ballets and Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Yuri Grigorovich deals with Hoffmann s fantastic imagery and takes ideas from Marius Petipa s scenario: battle of the mice, snowflakes flurry, character dances executed by the dolls that came to life. The most talented soloists of the Bolshoi Ballet appear in this production including Nina Kaptsova (Marie) and Artem Ovcharenko (the Nutcracker Prince) and Denis Savin (Drosselmeyer.

Casse-noisette et les quatre royaumes en streaming. Swietlana Zakharowa - nr. 1. The beginning of the scene at 34:42, In the Pine Forest, is one of the most beautiful moments in all of classical music, I think, certainly in Tchaikovsky's oeuvre. The simplistic melody and harmonization both mix so well with the warm orchestration that it sometimes brings me to tears, especially when heard in the context of the full ballet, with or without staging and dancers.

Pour la Danseuse, also als Solotanz, bezeichnet. [10] Im Album Thats Christmas To Me der amerikanische A-cappella-Gruppe Pentatonix ist der Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy enthalten. [11] Das Weihnachtsalbum Oi to the World! von 1996 der Punkrockband The Vandals enthält ebenfalls eine Adaption der Zuckerfee im Song Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies [12] Publikationen (Auswahl. Casse-noisette remix. First trumpet player ? . Casse-noisette ballet & orch. opera national. de russie. YouTube. From an early age, Tchaikovsky had relished stage works involving magic or fantasy such as Webers Der Freischütz and Mozarts Don Giovanni. After seeing Adams Giselle he became a ballet devotee. Such was his enthusiasm that, not long after his graduating from the St Petersburg Conservatory in 1866, he created a short ballet to entertain his young nieces—daughters of his sister Sasha—called The Lake of Swans. His nephew, Yury Davydov, recalled that Tchaikovsky not only composed the music but also ‘invented the steps and pirouettes, and danced them himself, showing the performers what he required of them. At such moments Uncle Pyotr, red in the face, wet with perspiration as he sang the tune, presented a pretty amusing sight. Tchaikovsky eventually developed this private entertainment into a full-length ballet, Swan Lake. Though hobbled with mediocre choreography and indifferently danced at its 1877 premiere staged in Moscows Bolshoi Theatre, its music nonetheless stood head and shoulders above the usual run of ballet scores, and it was not long before Tchaikovskys talent was recognised by the head of the Directorate of Imperial Theatres, Ivan Vsevolozhsky. In charge of the Mariinsky Theatre from 1881, Vsevolozhsky soon proved an able administrator with a genius for devising ballets. Starting with Tchaikovskys Sleeping Beauty (1890) Vsevolozhsky instigated productions in which music, choreography and design (he himself designing many hundreds of splendid costumes) were united into a single concept, rather than, as had previously been the case, haphazardly thrown together. Vsevolozhskys approach would be emulated and then developed in the early 20th century by the legendary impresario, Serge Diaghilev. The great success of Sleeping Beauty, involving the close collaboration between Vsevolozhsky, Tchaikovsky and the legendary choreographer Marius Petipa, inevitably prompted Vsevolozhsky to plan a sequel from the same team. Hoffmanns The Nutcracker, as re-written by Alexandre Dumas père, was then enjoying much popularity in Russia. The story concerns a little girl (widely known today as Clara, but originally named Marie) who is given a nutcracker soldier for Christmas by her godfather, the fantastical clockmaker and automata creator Drosselmeyer. In the night, she and her nutcracker soldier become involved in a battle with a sinister army of mice, during which she rescues her hero. By declaring unconditional love for her soldier, an evil spell is broken and the nutcracker resumes his original handsome human form. Yet when Vsevolozhsky first proposed a scenario based on the Dumas version, the composer, according to the memoirs of his brother, Modest, was ‘not much pleased with the subject. Tchaikovsky certainly admired the dark fantasy of Hoffmanns original, so he may have been disappointed by the tamer rewrite proposed by Vsevolozhsky (in which Clara and her soldier end in a kind of childs heaven of sweets. Still, Tchaikovsky was persuaded to start work, and early in 1891 was working against the clock to compose both Nutcracker and an opera with which it was to be double-billed, Iolanta, before an imminent tour in America. By April, having composed Nutcracker s Overture and first five numbers, as well as the Waltz of the Snowflakes, Tchaikovsky had reached the end of his tether. He wrote begging Vsevolozhsky for a postponement. The various ballet and opera characters, he said, ‘frighten, horrify, and pursue me, waking and sleeping, mocking me with the thought that I shall not cope with them. Just after writing that letter, he received news that his beloved sister, Sasha, had died. Vsevolozhsky naturally wrote back reassuring Tchaikovsky that everything could be postponed a year. Relieved of this immediate burden, Tchaikovsky fulfilled his tour of America (obliged by having already spent a good part of a generous advance. He returned newly enthused about the ballet. Inspired by a discovery he made in Paris, Tchaikovsky wrote to his publisher about ‘a new orchestral instrument, something between a small piano and a glockenspiel with a divinely marvelous sound … It is called the ‘Celesta Mustel and it costs 1, 200 francs … I would like to ask you to order this instrument. You will lose nothing on it … you will sell it to the Directorate of the Theatres, when they need it for the ballet. He begged his publisher to keep the celesta a secret, ‘for I am afraid that Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov will get wind of it and use its unusual effects sooner than me …. Tchaikovsky had previously used a glockenspiel in his Orchestral Suite No 1, composed after his Fourth Symphony and his Violin Concerto in 1879. The March in which the glockenspiel appears anticipates Nutcracker s soundworld, including its celebrated ‘Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy. The celestas advantage over the glockenspiel was its ability to create through its keyboard the effect of a plashing fountain, as required by Petipa to accompany the Sugar-Plum Fairy. It helped, too, that the celestas sound could be reminiscent of the musical boxes one might expect to find in Drosselmeyers clockwork world. Another orchestral colour unfamiliar to Tchaikovskys audience was the purring of flutter-tongued flutes, a technique Tchaikovsky had recently learned from a professional flautist who had once been his harmony student: he used this sound to depict the cascading river of Rose essence which greets the arrival of Clara and her Nutcracker prince in Act II. Even beside these exotic colours, Tchaikovskys mastery of evocative orchestral colours remains peerless. Even before the curtain rises, this is evident in the Overtures thistledown light scoring, achieved by removing cellos and basses from the string orchestra, making the husky alto voices of the violas the lowest part, with the sparkling glint of triangle adding to its sense of fairy enchantment. Note, too, how that scoring also prepares for the first numbers more down-to-earth atmosphere of homely warmth created by the belated entry of cellos and basses, with beguiling ‘dolce violin theme counterpointed by oily dark bass clarinet. And Tchaikovskys depiction of the moonlit hall just before midnight is an evocative tapestry of fluttering string tremolandos, shuddering bass clarinet, downward plunging harp glissandos and twittering woodwind. Another striking feature of the score is its array of childrens instruments, including toy trumpets, toy drum (Tchaikovsky insisted that a standard side drum was not to be used) cuckoos, quails and cymbals. These were intended to be played on-stage by the child performers in the opening party scene. Indeed, Tchaikovsky and Vsevolozhsky had planned from the very start that children should play a major role in Nutcracker —a highly unusual and controversial decision for that time. If Nutcracker was in fact intended, in a very real sense, as a ballet for children, this would explain its relatively simple yet brightly coloured themes, and why nearly all the dances, most particularly those in Act I originally intended for child performers, are relatively short. It may also explain why The Nutcracker, though a ‘full-length ballet, is barely more than half the length of either its predecessors, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty: in other words, an ideal length not to tax an audience of young children. It is true, the new ballet was originally to be staged as part of a double bill, the other (first) half being Tchaikovskys opera Iolanta: this would, again plausibly, explain the ballets length. Yet there was nothing in the contract Tchaikovsky signed to suggest that the two works should be indissolubly linked, and after the initial run of performances the opera and ballet went their separate ways. Indeed Tchaikovsky, once past his initial creative crisis, described Nutcracker in a letter to Modest as ‘good—a judgement to which audiences and dancers around the world have fully concurred ever since. from notes by Daniel Jaffé 2016.

Amjad Khan (Goodwill Ambassador IIMSAM-UN- ECOSOC [2] and researched n written by Bhaswati Chakrabarty. [3] The film is based on the life and struggle of a Pakistani teenager, girl-education activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai. [4] Popular Indian television child actress Reem Shaikh makes her film debut, playing the lead role of Malala. [5] The film also features the late Om Puri (in his final film) Divya Dutta, Atul Kulkarni, Mukesh Rishi and Pankaj Tripathi. The film was released on 31st January 2020. [6] Produced under the banner of Tekno Films and Pen Studios, and presented by Dr. Jayantilal Gada, Gul Makai is the first Malala Yousafzai biopic to be made. Changemaker Priya Ramesh Samant is the impact advisor to this film. Plot [ edit] Gul Makai accounts the courageous journey and struggle of 2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, starting from her humble upbringing in the Swat Valley in northwestern Pakistan to her becoming the champion for free education to all women. When Swat Valley was seized by Taliban gunmen in 2009 and Sharia law was imposed upon its people, Malala spoke out for the rights of girls, especially the right to receive a complete education. She started blogging on the BBC Urdu website under the pseudonym Gul Makai, against the oppression faced by them in the Swat Valley. As she continued her activism, gaining worldwide recognition and support, she was hunted down and shot by a Taliban gunman as part of the organization's violent opposition to girls' education. Cast [ edit] Reem Shaikh as Malala Yousafzai Atul Kulkarni as Ziauddin Yousafzai Divya Dutta as Toor Pekai Yousafzai Om Puri as General Kayani Arif Zakaria as Sufi Mohammed Mukesh Rishi as Maulana Fazlullah Abhimanyu Singh as Hakimullah Mehsud Pankaj Tripathi as Beitullah Mehsud Sharib Hashmi as Ataullah Khan Kamlesh Gill as the Grandmother Production [ edit] H. Amjad Khan, who is a Permanent Intergovernmental Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, decided to make a film on Malala's life and struggle in 2012, right after the assassination attempt on her by Taliban gunmen. [7] He announced the film in late 2012. Then writer Bhaswati Chakrabarty, spent the next 4 years researching and writing the script. [8] To cast the right girl for the role of Malala, several hundred actresses were auditioned. Finally, the director announced a newcomer for the role, 16-year old Bangladeshi student from Dhaka named Fatima Sheikh. [9] 10] Although no photographs showing Fatima Sheikhs face or other details about her were released to ensure her safety and security, her identity got leaked. Her family started receiving threats from religious extremists, who also threw stones at their house in Dhaka. Fatima Sheikh's family decided to back out due to the pressure. The search for Malala continued and finally Indian television child actress Reem Shaikh was cast for the role of Malala. [11] Veteran Bollywood actors like Om Puri, Divya Dutta, Mukesh Rishi and Arif Zakaria were cast in other important roles. According to the director, physical resemblance with the real life person was given special consideration while casting all of the characters. [12] The film went into production in late 2016. The first schedule of the film was filmed at locations in Bhuj (Gujarat) and Mumbai. [13] The 2nd schedule of the film which was to be shot in Kashmir was deferred due to the strained circumstances there. [14] As the conditions got back to normal in Kashmir, the shoot resumed in January 2018 amidst tight security in Ganderbal district of Kashmir. [15] 16] 17] The shooting wrapped up by end of January 2018 [18] and the film has been in post-production since then. The film has been edited by the national award-winning editor, Praveen Angre. The film has gone through extensive VFX work to re-create Swat Valley landscape and war scenes between the Taliban and Pakistani Army. The background score for the film has been composed by Amar Mohile, who has also done the background scores for Bollywood films like Dilwale and Shootout at Wadala. All the songs in the film except the title song have been written and composed by the director H. Amjad Khan himself. The title song has been written by Bhaswati Chakrabarty. Gul Makai Times Of India's Rating 1. 5/5 avg. users' rating 4. 4/5 Rate Movie Cast: Reem Shaikh, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Om Puri, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh Direction: H. E. Amjad Khan Genre: Drama Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes Gul Makai Movie Review Filmfare Times Of India critic's rating: 2. 0/5 Nobel prize winner Malala Yousafzai. at 14 she was she was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. survived an attack on her life and emerged as a stronger voice of dissent against the forces of Taliban. The Swat Valley in North-Western Pakistan where she lived was totally under the yoke of the Taliban who were dead against a secular education for girls. Malala blogged for the BBC Urdu service under the pseudonym Gul Makai, the name of a heroine from a Pashtun folk tale. In 2012 a militant boarded her school bus and opened fire, wounding her as well as two of her friends. She was taken to a military hospital and was later flown to Birmingham for further treatment. The timely action saved her life. Hers is an inspiring life indeed and kudos to director  H. Amjad Khan for attempting to showcase it. His heart certainly was in the right place when he started the project. It went through a severe development hell and took many years in the making and as a result the end product is a disjointed piece of work. Attention to detail was sorely missing. For instance, in a scene where textbooks were being burnt by the militants one could see that they were of Navneet Publications. How hard was it to acquire some genuine Pakistani textbooks? Some characters speak with a distinct Marathi accent and even look like they belong to Maharashtra police rather than being members of the Pakistani army. Instead of making a film about a sensitive girl the director has chosen to give it a masala potboiler treatment. The terrorists lurk around carrying huge guns like B movie villains killing anyone they dislike on a whim. And the whole counter strike by the Pakistani army gets so much glorification that you feel like you're watching a war film. It's Uri part two but with Pak army as the hero. We're sure that wasn't the director's intention. After you get over the shock of inadvertently watching a war film under the guise of watching a Nobel Laureate's biopic, you spare a thought towards Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, two eternally professional actors having the ability to rise above insipid scripts. They play Malala's father and mother and have given the film everything they have got and more. The scene where they break down hearing news of an attack on her gets to you. Newcomer Reem Shaikh tries hard to become Malala but the effort shows. There is a clip from a speech by the real Malala at the end credits which offers more impact about education of girls worldwide than this two hour film because it showed a person's burning desire to bring about a change. Sadly that intensity was absent in this popcorn version of events. Trailer: Gul Makai Pallabi Dey Purkayastha, January 31, 2020, 12:14 AM IST critic's rating: 1. 5/5 STORY: ‘Gul Makai chronicles the life and struggles of Pakistani Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, leading up to her notorious shooting in the hands of Taliban on October 9, 2012. REVIEW: Born in a small hamlet named Mingora, near the beautiful Swat valley of Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai (Reem Shaikh) has been academically inclined from a tender age. But, despite her father Ziauddin Yousafzais (Atul Kulkarni) unwavering faith in her and his community, their world comes crumbling down when the anti-education extremist group, Taliban, hijacks their otherwise peaceful valley and puts an indefinite ban on education for the girl child. The mood of ‘Gul Makai is focused on the brutality that the local town-dwellers were subjected to during the Taliban occupation of Swat. Its tonality emphasises on one little girls unabashed and unquenchable thirst to acquire knowledge – not just for her own sake, but for every other girl child around her. True, the subject of this biographical piece is fascinating but, H. E Amjad Khans approach towards the same does not translate onto the big screen. For one, the narrative is messy from the word go and although Khan tries to juxtaposition Malalas inner turmoil with the war waged by the Talibans, he ends up concocting a story that is half-baked, and riddled with glaring flaws and discrepancies. And, barring seasoned actors Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, the star cast (including the protagonist) has failed to deliver believable performances. In fact, Reems version of Malala neither renders a cathartic experience for its viewers, nor does it evoke any sense of real emotions. Also, the background score is a replica of the 80s war films in a not-so-flattering way and the haphazard writing goes on for 132 minutes, making ‘Gul Makai a tedious watch. It is quite disappointing that the film does not mention any of the controversies Malala has courted along the way, which is hard to overlook given the fact that the film is biographical in nature. ‘Gul Makai could have been a very strong story, but the initial spark fizzles out when translated on screen; the takeaway here is close to nothing.

Duration: 95Minute. Rob Reiner's romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as the title pair. The film opens with the two strangers, both newly graduated from the University of Chicago, share a car trip from Chicago to New York, where they are both going to make their way. During the trip, they discuss aspects of their characters and their lives, eventually deciding it is impossible for men and women to be "just friends." They arrive in New York and go their separate ways. They meet a few years later on an airplane and Harry reveals he is married. They meet again at a bookstore a few years after that where Harry reveals he is now divorced. From that point on, the two form a friendship. Eventually their closeness results in their respective best friends (played by Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby) meeting and falling in love with each other. At a New Year's Eve party Harry and Sally confront the complex tangle of emotions they feel for each other. User ratings: 8 of 10. genre: Romance, Comedy. Directed by: Rob Reiner. Actor: Carrie Fisher.

By the time Harry Connick Jr is crooning away at the end of When Harry Met Sally. we all know that the films title characters are perfect for each other. But what else do we know about them? The answer is: not much. We know that Sally Albright (Meg Ryan) takes an hour and a half to order a sandwich, and that Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) rates Mallomars as “the greatest cookie of all time”, but we dont know if they have any brothers or sisters, for instance, or if their parents are alive. We dont know if they were bullied at school, or if they enjoy their jobs, or what their plans are for the future. We dont know where they stand on the political issues of the day. And yet those omissions are one key reason why When Harry Met Sally. is still regarded as one of the finest romantic comedies ever made, 30 years on from its release in 1989.  More like this: Ten films to watch this July -       The films that defined Generation X -       What Alien can tell us about office life There are plenty of other reasons, admittedly, from the sublime dialogue to the flawless performances, from the finger-clicking music to the mouth-watering Big Apple cinematography. But the films true innovation is the way its director, Rob Reiner, and screenwriter, Nora Ephron, strip away the characters biographical details, just as they clear away all the obstacles on their path to happiness. Everything is removed from the film except Harry and Sallys attitudes towards love, sex, friendship and each other. The result is a romantic comedy distilled to its essence: it has romance and it has comedy, and it has nothing else. Its candour about everything from post-coital hugs to faked orgasms was revolutionary Its such a simple tactic, with such a delightful outcome, that it is easy to forget how bold and unusual it was. But it is far less easy to think of a romcom with anything like the same undiluted purity. Take a look at those being made around the same time, and youll see a fire chief with an inhumanly long nose (Roxanne) a stockbroker who steals her bosss identity (Working Girl) a widow who is smitten by her fiancés angry one-handed brother (Moonstruck) and a fruit-and-veg wholesaler who is smitten with a mermaid (Splash. Take a look at When Harry Met Sally. and youll see some universal truths about being single and falling in love. It is so devoted to male-female relationships, to the exclusion of all else, that its working title was simply ‘Boy Meets Girl. “The whole idea behind this film was to really examine how men and women bump up against each other during the dating dance that they do, ” says Reiner in the directors commentary. “When we originally thought of this film, it was just going to be men and women talking about men and women, and that dance that happens before you finally wind up with each other. ” The idea occurred to Reiner because his first marriage (to actor-director Penny Marshall) had ended, and he had returned reluctantly to bachelor life. He and his friend Andrew Scheinman told Ephron all about their experiences, Ephron added the female perspective, and she turned their confessional conversations into a screenplay which was then made even better by Crystals improvisations. The big question on the posters was: “Can men and women be friends, or does sex always get in the way? ” But that was just one of the topics the film broached. And in the days before people used the internet to share their most intimate affairs with the world, its candour about everything from post-coital hugs to faked orgasms was revolutionary. “The only way the movie would work, ” says Reiner, “was if we really exposed what men and women really felt and really thought about. ” Several times, the film acknowledges that it is leaving out everything except those thoughts and feelings. At the beginning, Harry and Sally are two strangers who have graduated from Chicago University. They drive to New York together in Sallys car, and because theyve got 18 hours to kill, Harry says to her: “Why dont you tell me the story of your life? ” In a more conventional film, that would be Sallys cue to recite a heart-warming childhood anecdote about a family pet. But in When Harry Met Sally. she changes the subject. ‘We get to see them grow up Years later, Harry and Sally try to pair each other off with their friends Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher. But when they bring up their backgrounds and occupations – “Harry is from New Jersey. ” “Sally writes for New York magazine. ” – Jess and Marie couldnt be less interested. It doesnt matter what people do or where they are from, the film suggests. What matters is how much they like each other. And that is the issue faced by Harry and Sally themselves. In most romcoms, the prospective lovers are kept apart by living in different cities (Ephrons own Sleepless in Seattle) or different countries (Four Weddings and a Funeral. They have to deal with a surprise pregnancy (Knocked Up) a cultural gulf (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) or a toweringly stupid magazine article (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. But once When Harry Met Sally. reaches its present-day section, its hero and heroine are single, living in New York, and getting on well. There is nothing stopping them becoming a couple except their own fears and hang-ups. Why else would Sally spot Harry lurking in a bookshops Personal Growth section? His personal growth is the closest thing the film has to a plot. When Harry met Sally… and Seinfeld showed that a comedy didnt need to have a gimmicky high-concept scenario “So many romantic comedies condense the action into one night or one weekend, “ says Tamar Jeffers McDonald, the author of the BFI Film Classics guide to When Harry Met Sally. “One of the amazing and audacious things about this one is that it gives the characters time to mature and see other people and make their mistakes. Eventually, theyre battle-worn and weary, and theyve become the people who they actually are. We get to see them grow up. ” In the DVDs ‘making of documentary, Ephron sums it up like this: “There are two traditions of romantic comedy, the Christian tradition and the Jewish tradition. In the Christian tradition, there is a genuine obstacle. In the Jewish tradition pioneered by Woody Allen, the basic obstacle is the neurosis of the male character. ” True enough – but she and Reiner take this Jewish tradition even further than Allen does – and apply it to both Harry and Sally. In Annie Hall, for example, Alvy (Allen) loathes California, while Annie (Diane Keaton) wants to move to Los Angeles to pursue her singing career. To some extent the film is a culture-clash comedy concerning the differences between a Jewish Brooklynite and a WASP from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. In When Harry Met Sally. the differences are far smaller and subtler, and thats why it is unique. Well, unique on the big screen, anyway. The film premiered in July 1989, in the very same month that Seinfeld debuted on television, and in some ways the romcom and the sitcom are freakishly similar. Both feature a cynical Jewish joker, his platonic (most of the time) female best friend, and his anxious male best friend. And both include discussions of apartment-hunting in Manhattan, the appropriate interval to leave before asking out a divorcée, and, yes, faked orgasms. Together, they showed that a comedy didnt need to have a gimmicky high-concept scenario. If it was funny and insightful enough, it could focus solely on what it was like to be on the dating scene in New York. On television, this lesson was learnt by the makers of Friends, Sex and the City, How I Met Your Mother, and many more. But in cinema, there have been fewer attempts to imitate When Harry Met Sally. perhaps because the original gets everything so right. Like Mallomars, it is the greatest of all time. Love film? The real love movies, not the shit now, Meg and Tom with this and you've got an email are the best. Here are some things you might not have known about the award-winning—and much-beloved—1960s-set coming-of-age tale, which made its debut on January 31, 1988. 1. The basic concept for The Wonder Years began as a film script. “We played around with writing a screenplay that used narration as a device, ” series co-creator Carol Black told New York magazine in 1989. “We just started to think that there was a lot of potential fun in that ‘cause you can really play with the contrast between the narrators point of view and what the characters are doing. And you can go inside their head and expose what theyre really thinking when theyre saying something different … And then we just sort of jumped from there to thinking that effect is accentuated when you have an adult narrator looking back on childhood. ” Black created the series with her husband, Neal Marlens; the couple had previously worked on Growing Pains. 2. The Wonder Years was inspired by A Christmas Story. From the coming-of-age theme to the use of narration, A Christmas Story inspired the spirit of The Wonder Years. Peter “Ralphie” Billingsley even appeared in the series's final two episodes as one of Kevins roommates. 3. The Wonder Years s lack of laugh track and single camera setup were revolutionary. The Wonder Years set itself apart from other shows of its time, production-wise, with its single camera setup, use of a narrator, and complete lack of laugh track. “ The Wonder Years [showed the television industry] that its OK to create a show like that—to take out the laugh track, to try different camera styles—to take a risk, ” Josh Saviano, who played Paul Pfeiffer, told Salon in 2013. 4. Fred Savage was the obvious choice to play The Wonder Years s Kevin Arnold. Casting kids is never an easy task. To help them in finding their lead actor, Marlens and Black interviewed five casting directors for recommendations. All five of them suggested Fred Savage, who at that point was best known for his role in The Princess Bride. “By the time we actually settled on a casting director, we had already resolved that we should see Fred, ” Marlens told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1988. “Knowing nothing about him, we arranged to screen some unedited footage of a film he was making at the time, Vice Versa … [We saw] a marvelous actor with a natural quality, which essentially means he has no quality at all except being a kid. It sounds funny, but its a rare thing to find in a child actor. Its the same thing we looked for and discovered in Josh Saviano and Danica McKellar. ” 5. The Wonder Years is set in Anytown, USA. Though no specific location is ever given for Kevin Arnolds hometown, thats not the doing of the seriess creators. Neal Marlens wanted to set The Wonder Years in Huntington, Long Island—his hometown—and additional elements were also pulled from Blacks hometown of Silver Spring, Maryland. But it was at ABCs insistence that no city or state was ever mentioned. Still, many eagle-eyed watchers have combed through the series for clues—like Jack Arnolds license plate and Waynes drivers license—that place the show in California, where it was filmed. 6. The Wonder Years premiered after the Super Bowl. After more than 80 million viewers tuned in to see the Washington Redskins crush the Denver Broncos (final score: 42 to 10) on January 31, 1988, they were treated to the seriess premiere—which Marlens called “a bit of Americana after the quintessential example of Americana. ” 7. The Wonder Years won its first Emmy after just six episodes. Though it wasnt an immediate ratings bonanza, The Wonder Years was a critical smash from the get-go. On August 28—with only six episodes screened—Marlens and Black took home the 1988 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. 8. Fred Savage became the youngest Lead Actor Emmy nominee. In 1989, at the age of 13, Savage became the youngest actor to be nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category. He was nominated again in 1990. 9. Danica McKellars toughest competition for Winnie Cooper was her sister. When it came down to casting the role of dream girl Winnie Cooper, there were two final contenders: Danica McKellar and her sister, Crystal. “It was practically a tossup, ” casting director Mary Buck told the Los Angeles Times in 1990. After choosing Danica for the role, Crystal was hired for the recurring role of Becky Slater, Winnies one-time rival for Kevins affections. 10. Kevin and Winnies first kiss was the real thing. In the seriess premiere episode, Kevin and Winnie share an awkward first kiss, a coming-of-age ritual neither of the young actors had yet to engage in in real life. “The one good thing about getting your first kiss on camera is that you know for sure its going to happen, ” McKellar said in 2014. For his part, Savage called it terrifying. “We were both really scared and nervous and—and—didn't know what was going to happen or … if we were going to do it right. ” 11. A mutual crush between Fred Savage and Danica McKellar was inevitable. Though they swear the relationship eventually morphed into a brother-sister sort of bond, both Savage and McKellar admitted to having mutual crushes in People. “I was in love with her for the same reasons every other boy fell in love with her, ” Savage said. “You won't meet a sweeter, nicer girl—and she's gorgeous. ” “In the beginning we had a mutual crush, ” added McKellar. “Then things went into the teasing stuff and then into a more comfortable, brother-sister thing. ” 12. It was Dan Laurias suggestion that The Wonder Years s Jack Arnold be a veteran. “I really didnt contribute that much, but the one thing I did contribute to the character is that when we were shooting the pilot I said to Neal, ‘Look, Im a vet. Im a Vietnam veteran and a Marine, and I think if the story is that Im a vet, thatd fit the character, ” Dan Lauria recalled to Paste. “Before we even finish the pilot, he said, ‘Well, if we go, Dan, were going to make you a Korean War vet to fit the frame. And so they did, and it paid off. There were a number of episodes where it was mentioned that I was a veteran and when my daughter left for college I gave her my old duffle bag from the service. We always had the Vietnam War in the background on the TV at the dinner table. So there were actual news clips. ” 13. Some of Kevin and Winnies dialogue in The Wonder Years was lifted from real life. “Kevin and Winnies relationship was, in some ways, defined by my friendship with Fred and some of the things that we would say, ” McKellar told Collider. “The writers would actually take lines from things that we were saying to each other, off camera, and put it into the script. There was this whole episode dedicated to, ‘Do you like him, or do you like him, like him? That was an expression that he and I used when we were talking about some guy that I had a crush on, in real life. And then, it showed up in a script, a few weeks later. There were a lot of blurred lines. ” 14. A growth spurt caused Winnie and Kevins breakup on The Wonder Years. Kevin and Winnies on-again, off-again romance was one of the seriess key storylines. But on at least one occasion—between the shows third and fourth seasons—the breakup was more of a practical decision when a growth spurt saw McKellar standing much taller than her sub-five-foot onscreen beau. The couple was kept apart just long enough for Savage to catch up to his co-stars height. 15. Jason Herveys brother was the real Wayne Arnold. “There were so many things that I borrowed from our real life experiences, ” Hervey told Uproxx of his brother, Scott. “Ill give you an example: Juliette Lewis was my girlfriend on the show at the time, and it was the drivers license episode. We took Fred—I mean, Kevin—to the mall because my mom made us, and I dropped him off at the absolute, absolute furthest end of the mall parking lot and I said to him, ‘Well, technically, this is the mall. And when I picked him up, of course, he was already flirting with this girl, and sure enough Wayne pulls up and I tell him to get in the car, and then every time he went to reach for the door, I kept jerking it forward. And obviously, the first day of 7th grade, my brother did that to me in real life, and just embarrassed the hell out of me. ” 16. Growing up was part of The Wonder Years s demise. The Wonder Years was a show about growing up, which is partially what led to its wrapping production after six seasons. “There has always been a question of just how long the wonder years last, ” executive producer Bob Brush told the Los Angeles Times in 1993, following the seriess finale. “As the kids were developing and getting older, there were of course new stories to tell, but the tension and constraints of the deadline of the concept of the wonder years were beginning to press on us … When [Fred Savage] became 16 and 17, there were really things he needed to get to that we couldnt do at 8 p. m., especially with the kind of venerable cachet that the show had obtained with its audience. We would get notes from the network saying, ‘You could do this on any show besides The Wonder Years. '” 17. The Wonder Years enlisted The Sopranos creator David Chases help. In an effort to breathe a more mature life into the series, producer Ken Topolsky commissioned Sopranos creator David Chase to write a script. “When its a suburban kid who has a pretty good life and hes complaining about mom not letting him do something, you just want to smack him, ” Topolowsky told The Wall Street Journal. “Thats when we felt that Kevins wonder years were over. ” Though he calls Chases script “phenomenal” and “one of the best, ” its storyline—which included hard drug use—would have been too big a leap for the family-friendly series. 18. Daniel Stern wasnt The Wonder Years s original narrator. Though Daniel Sterns voice is the adult Kevin Arnold we all know and love, it was Arye Gross who narrated the original pilot. Eventually, the series premiere was re-recorded with Stern. 19. Marilyn Manson was not Paul Pfeiffer. Its one of those Internet rumors that never seems to die. But somehow, somewhere, someone decided that Josh Saviano, the actor who played Kevins BFF Paul Pfeiffer, was in fact Marilyn Manson. Which is simply not true. Though that hasnt stopped the shock rocker from getting in on the fun. “I met [Marilyn Manson] once, ” Savage told ABC News. “He came up to me, and he goes, ‘You know, we worked together. I was like, ‘I do. I do know that. ” 20. Paul Pfeiffer really did become a lawyer. In the series finale, Kevin shares that Paul attended Harvard and became a lawyer. Which isnt too far off base. In reality, Josh Saviano attended Yale and became a lawyer. 21. The Wonder Years fans were disappointed that Kevin and Winnie didnt end up together. Executive producer Bob Brush knew that fans of the series wouldnt be happy that it didnt end with Kevin and Winnies happily ever after. “Some viewers will be surprised that nothing works out the way your fondest wish would be, ” Brush told the Los Angeles Times. “The message I wanted in there is that thats part of the beauty of life. Its fine to say, ‘I'd like everything to be just the way it was when I was 15 and I was happy, but it seemed more nurturing to me to say that we leave these things behind and we go on to forge new lives for ourselves. ” 22. The little boys voice in The Wonder Years s finale is Daniel Sterns son. As the series concludes, the voice of Kevins little boy is heard asking his dad to come outside and play catch. The voice is Sterns son. 23. The Wonder Years gave a boost to many young actors careers. Juliette Lewis, Jim Caviezel, Alicia Silverstone, Giovanni Ribisi, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, David Schwimmer, Carla Gugino, and John Corbett (then known as Jack) are just a few of the actors who found some of their earliest roles on The Wonder Years. Even Robin Thicke got in on the action, as a young man doing his teenaged best to pick up a girl. 24. Jack Arnold dated Maggie Seaver. Before The Wonder Years, Marlens and Black had created Growing Pains. Which is how Dan Lauria heard about the role of Jack Arnold. “I had done a part on Growing Pains, and I was going out with Joanna Kerns [who played mom Maggie Seaver on the show] at the time, so I heard about it through her, ” Lauria told Paste. “My agent couldnt get me in, and Joanna said, ‘Well, why dont you call Neal? He likes you, you guys got along. ‘Cause we both grew up on Long Island, so we would tease each other [about] which school was better at sports. And I said, ‘No, I dont want to do that, its so unprofessional, and Joanna went in and actually called Neal, and she came out and said, ‘Neal said be there tomorrow at 10 oclock. He thinks youre perfect. ” 25. Fred Savage will always be Kevin Arnold. Though he has made the transition from actor to producer and director of shows like Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Party Down, Savage told GQ that “The persona of The Wonder Years is something that's going to be with me forever. And I'm happy for that. It's nothing that I'd ever shy away from, and it makes me feel so good that it's something people still remember and talk about it and think of it so fondly. I think now I've established myself as a director, but starting out, I'd be foolish to think that every opportunity that came after The Wonder Years didn't stem from The Wonder Years. So I owe so much of everything to that show. ”.

An interview Ephron conducted with Reiner provided the basis for Harry. Sally was based on Ephron and some of her friends. Ephron supplied the structure of the film with much of the dialogue based on the real-life friendship between Reiner and Crystal. Plot [ edit] In 1977, Harry Burns and Sally Albright graduate from the University of Chicago and share the drive to New York City, where Sally is beginning journalism school and Harry is starting a career. Harry is dating Sally's friend Amanda. During the drive, Harry and Sally discuss their differing ideas about relationships; Sally disagrees with Harry's assertion that men and women cannot be friends as "the sex part gets in the way. At a diner, Harry tells Sally she is attractive, and she angrily accuses him of making a pass at her. They part in New York on unfriendly terms. Five years later, Harry and Sally find themselves on the same flight. Sally is dating Harry's neighbor Joe, and Harry is engaged to Helen, which surprises Sally. Harry suggests they become friends, forcing him to qualify his previous position about the impossibility of male-female friendships. They separate, concluding that they will not be friends. Harry and Sally run into each other again in a bookstore five years later. They have coffee and talk about their previous relationships; Sally and Joe broke up because she wanted a family and he did not want to marry, and Harry's wife Helen left him for another man. They take a walk and become friends. They have late-night phone conversations, go to dinner, and spend time together, discussing their love lives. During a New Year's Eve party, Harry and Sally find themselves attracted to each other. Even though they remain friends, they set each other up with their respective best friends, Marie and Jess. When the four go to a restaurant, Marie and Jess become fast friends and later become engaged. Over the phone, Sally tearfully tells Harry that her ex is getting married. He rushes to her apartment to comfort her, and they have sex; Harry leaves the next morning distressed. Their friendship cools until a heated argument at Jess and Marie's wedding dinner. Harry attempts to mend his friendship with Sally, but she feels that they cannot be friends. At a New Year's Eve party that year, Sally feels alone without Harry by her side. Harry spends New Year's alone, walking around the city. As Sally decides to leave the party early, Harry appears and declares his love for her. She argues that the only reason he is there is because he is lonely, but he lists the many things he realized he loves about her. They kiss and marry three months later, exactly 12 years and three months after their first meeting. The plot also contains several interlaced segments throughout the film where fictitious older married couples narrate to the camera their stories of how they met. The last couple that is interviewed before the closing credits is Harry and Sally. Cast [ edit] Billy Crystal as Harry Burns Meg Ryan as Sally Albright Carrie Fisher as Marie Fisher Bruno Kirby as Jess Fisher Steven Ford as Joe Lisa Jane Persky as Alice Michelle Nicastro as Amanda Reese Kevin Rooney as Ira Stone Harley Kozak as Helen Hillson Estelle Reiner as Female Customer Production [ edit] In 1984, director Rob Reiner, producer Andy Scheinman and writer Nora Ephron met over lunch at the Russian Tea Room in New York City to develop a project. [3] Reiner pitched an idea for a film that Ephron rejected. [4] The second meeting transformed into a long discussion about Reiner and Scheinman's lives as single men. Reiner remembers, I was in the middle of my single life. I'd been divorced for a while. I'd been out a number of times, all these disastrous, confusing relationships one after another. 5] The next time they all met, Reiner said that he had always wanted to do a film about two people who become friends and do not have sex because they know it will ruin their relationship but have sex anyway. Ephron liked the idea, and Reiner acquired a deal at a studio. [3] For materials, Ephron interviewed Reiner and Scheinman about their lives, creating the basis for Harry. Reiner was constantly depressed and pessimistic yet funny. Ephron also got bits of dialogue from these interviews. [3] She worked on several drafts over the years while Reiner made Stand By Me and The Princess Bride. [4] Billy Crystal "experienced vicariously" Reiner's (his best friend at the time) return to single life after divorcing comedian/filmmaker Penny Marshall and in the process was unconsciously doing research for the role of Harry. [3] During the screenwriting process when Ephron would not feel like writing, she would interview people who worked for the production company. Some of the interviews appeared in the film as the interludes between certain scenes featuring couples talking about how they met, 3] although the material was rewritten and reshot with actors. [6] For example, in the scene where Sally and Harry appear on a split-screen, talking on the telephone while watching their respective television sets, channel surfing, was something that Crystal and Reiner did every night. [6] Originally, Ephron wanted to call the film How They Met and went through several different titles. Reiner even started a contest with the crew during principal photography: whoever came up with the title won a case of champagne. [4] In order to get into the lonely mindset of Harry when he was divorced and single, Crystal stayed by himself in a separate room from the cast and crew while they were shooting in Manhattan. [6] The script initially ended with Harry and Sally remaining friends and not pursuing a romantic relationship because she felt that was "the true ending" as did Reiner. [4] Eventually, Ephron and Reiner realized that it would be a more appropriate ending for them to marry, though they admit that this is generally not a realistic outcome. [7] When posed the film's central question, can men and women just be friends, Ryan replied, Yes, men and women can just be friends. I have a lot of platonic (male) friends, and sex doesn't get in the way. Crystal said, I'm a little more optimistic than Harry. But I think it is difficult. Men basically act like stray dogs in front of a supermarket. I do have platonic (women) friends, but not best, best, best friends. 8] Rob Reiner initially envisioned actress Susan Dey for the role of Sally Albright. When she declined, he later considered Elizabeth Perkins. He also considered casting Elizabeth McGovern. Molly Ringwald was almost cast, but Meg Ryan convinced Reiner to give her the role. Reiner's mother Estelle and daughter Tracy both played roles in the film. Katz's Delicatessen scene [ edit] Film still from the famous restaurant scene Katz's Deli still hangs this sign above the table. In a scene featuring the two title characters having lunch at Katz's Delicatessen in Manhattan, the couple are arguing about a man's ability to recognize when a woman is faking an orgasm. Sally claims that men cannot tell the difference, and to prove her point, she vividly (fully clothed) fakes one as other diners watch. The scene ends with Sally casually returning to her meal as a nearby patron (played by Reiner's mother) places her order: I'll have what she's having. When Estelle Reiner died at age 94 in 2008, The New York Times referred to her as the woman "who delivered one of the most memorably funny lines in movie history. 9] This scene was shot again and again, and Ryan demonstrated her fake orgasms for hours. [7] Katz's Deli still hangs a sign above the table that says, Where Harry met Sally. hope you have what she had. 10] 11] This classic scene was born when the film started to focus too much on Harry. Crystal remembers saying. We need something for Sally to talk about. and Nora said, Well, faking orgasm is a great one. and right away we said, Well, the subject is good. and then Meg came on board and we talked with her about the nature of the idea and she said, Well, why don't I just fake one, just do one. 3] Ryan suggested that the scene take place in a restaurant, 12] and it was Crystal who came up with the scene's classic punchline – "I'll have what she's having. 3] In 2005, the quote was listed 33rd on the AFI's 100 Years. 100 Movie Quotes list of memorable movie lines. Reiner recalls that at a test screening, all of the women in the audience were laughing while all of the men were silent. [4] In late 2013, Improv Everywhere, the New York City initiative behind the annual No Pants Day in the subways and various flash-mob stunts, convened and filmed a re-enactment in Katz's Delicatessen. While a look-alike couple performed the scene, 30 others joined as if it was contagious. Surprised staff and customers responded in appreciation. The film and follow-up interviews are public. [13] In October of the same year, Katz's invited Baron Von Fancy to display his ten-foot-high mural quoting the famous line in its pop-up gallery next door, The Space. [14] Soundtrack [ edit] The When Harry Met Sally. soundtrack album features American singer and pianist Harry Connick Jr. Bobby Colomby, the drummer for Blood, Sweat & Tears, was a friend of Reiner's and recommended Harry Connick Jr., giving the director a tape of the musician's music. Reiner was struck by Connick's voice and how he sounded like a young Frank Sinatra. The movie's soundtrack album was released by Columbia Records in July 1989. The soundtrack consists of standards performed by Harry Connick Jr. with a big band and orchestra arranged by Marc Shaiman. Connick won his first Grammy for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. [15] Arrangements and orchestrations on " It Had to Be You. Where or When. I Could Write a Book" and "But Not for Me" are by Connick and Shaiman. Other songs were performed as piano / vocal solos, or with Connick's trio featuring Benjamin Jonah Wolfe on bass and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums. Also appearing on the album are tenor saxophonist Frank Wess and guitarist Joy Berliner. The soundtrack went to #1 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Chart and was within the top 50 on the Billboard 200. [16] Connick also toured North America in support of this album. [17] It went on to reach double-platinum status. [18] The music in the film is performed by various artists, such as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby, and Harry Connick Jr. Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] Columbia Pictures released the film using the "platform" technique which involved opening it in a few select cities letting positive word of mouth generate interest and then gradually expanding distribution over subsequent weeks. On its opening weekend, it grossed 1 million in 41 theaters. [19] Billy Crystal was worried that the film would flop at the box office because it was up against several summer blockbuster films, like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Batman. [3] The film went into wide release on July 21, 1989, and grossed 8. 8 million on its opening weekend in 775 theaters. [19] This was later expanded to 1, 174 theaters and the film grossed a total of 92. 8 million in North America, well above its 16 million budget. [19] Critical response [ edit] When Harry Met Sally. received a 90% approval rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes based on 70 reviews, with an average rating of 8. 03/10. The website's critical consensus reads, Rob Reiner's touching, funny film set a new standard for romantic comedies, and he was ably abetted by the sharp interplay between Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. 20] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 76 out of 100, based on 17 critics. [21] The film led Roger Ebert to call Reiner "one of Hollywood's very best directors of comedy" and said that it was "most conventional, in terms of structure and the way it fulfills our expectations. But what makes it special, apart from the Ephron screenplay, is the chemistry between Crystal and Ryan. 22] In a review for The New York Times, Caryn James called When Harry Met Sally. an "often funny but amazingly hollow film" that "romanticized lives of intelligent, successful, neurotic New Yorkers" James characterized it as "the sitcom version of a Woody Allen film, full of amusing lines and scenes, all infused with an uncomfortable sense of déjà vu. 23] Rita Kempley of The Washington Post praised Meg Ryan as the "summer's Melanie Griffith – a honey-haired blonde who finally finds a showcase for her sheer exuberance. Neither naif nor vamp, she's a woman from a pen of a woman, not some Cinderella of a Working Girl. 24] Mike Clark of USA Today gave the film three out of four stars, writing, Crystal is funny enough to keep Ryan from all-out stealing the film. She, though, is smashing in an eye-opening performance, another tribute to Reiner's flair with actors. 25] David Ansen provided one of the rare negative reviews of the film for Newsweek. He criticized the casting of Crystal, Not surprisingly he handles the comedy superbly, but he's too cool and self-protective an actor to work as a romantic leading man" and felt that as a film, of wonderful parts, it doesn't quite add up. 26] Accolades [ edit] Association Category Nominee Results Academy Award Best Original Screenplay Nora Ephron Nominated American Comedy award Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture Won Funniest Actor in a Motion Picture Funniest Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture ASCAP Film and Television Music award Top Box Office Films Marc Shaiman British Academy Film award Best Film Rob Reiner Best Screenplay - Original Casting Society of America award Best Casting for Feature Film, Comedy Jane Jenkins Janet Hershenson Chicago Film Critics Association award Best Actress David di Donatello award Best Foreign Director Best Foreign Actress Directors Guild award Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures DVD Exclusive award Best Audio Commentary Golden Globe award Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Best Director - Motion Picture Best Screenplay - Motion Picture Best Lead Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Best Lead Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical Writers Guild award Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen Legacy [ edit] Over the years, When Harry Met Sally. has become "the quintessential contemporary feel-good relationship movie that somehow still rings true. 27] Ephron still received letters from people obsessed with the film and still had "people who say to me all the time, I was having a Harry-and-Sally relationship with him or her. 27] The film is 23rd on AFI's 100 Years. 100 Laughs list of the top comedy films in American cinema and number 60 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies. 28] Entertainment Weekly named it as one of the Top 10 romantic movies of all time. When harry met sally cast. Afterwards, Clairol Herbal Essences became popular. When harry met sally free online. When harry met reaming. My first memory of When Harry Met Sally… is that I wasnt allowed to watch it. When I think about the film now, I see it as a romance—an inverted one, where love does not come until 12 years after first sight, but a love story nonetheless. But When Harry Met Sally… s unwholesome raciness—the faked orgasm, the f-bombs, the woman who meows in the throes of passion—featured prominently in the films marketing campaign. So did the films central, provocative, deeply heteronormative question: Can men and women ever “just” be friends? And it needed an R rating to answer that question, too! The film glowed with forbidden allure. My parents held the common, irrational conviction that watching sexuality was much worse than watching violence. I somehow saw The Killing Fields before I watched When Harry Met Sally…; if you cant guess from the title, The Killing Fields is a harrowing movie about genocide in Cambodia. So what I first learned about When Harry Met Sally…, besides its cast, was that Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm in the movie. Someone had to explain the joke to me after an assembly in which a visiting lecturer made a joke about having a When Harry Met Sally… moment to an auditorium full of middle schoolers. (No one laughed. I wasnt entirely sure what an orgasm was, let alone how to fake one. But it seemed like a power move. Now this movie is one of my formative texts, those stories shelved in your brain that gradually become a part of your psychology. It goes without saying that its magnificent, a combination of talents at the height of their powers, coupled with filmmaking that treasured its characters, atmosphere, and setting. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in Katz's Deli, the site of the famously faked orgasm. Columbia Pictures/Everett Collection. When Harry Met Sally… is a collection of finely hewn set pieces—nearly all of which pivot around nothing more than a conversation. (Marie with the Rolodex at the Central Park Boathouse! Jess and Harry doing the wave in Giants Stadium after Harrys divorce! The “wagon wheel, Roy Rogers, garage sale coffee table”. Ive seen it so many times that I dont watch it so much as remind myself of what happens next, mouthing the dialogue to myself. I realized that I have unconsciously adopted a hairstyle close to Ryans in the film, a curly shag with bangs. Writer Nora Ephron and director Rob Reiner used When Harry Met Sally… as a canvas to explore heterosexual partnership, infusing the leads played by Ryan and Billy Crystal with facets of their respective personalities. Ryan was in her first role as Ephrons muse and stand-in, playing fussiness to the point of painful, adorable tenderness. Crystal was the recipient of Reiners projections, creating in Harry a brooding jokester who prefers sports to feelings. The story springs past Harry and Sallys tortured relationship to explore other characters—notably Carrie Fisher as Marie, Sallys best friend, who inelegantly falls for Harrys best friend, Jess, played by Bruno Kirby. The main story is broken up by little interviews with happily married elderly couples. (The dialogue comes from interviews with real-life couples, but actors were hired to perform the lines onscreen. Its an ecstatic survey of marriage, a loving portrait of loving. And though it is candid about sex, the film is barely racy; theres only one actual sex scene, and its not particularly hot. Its not heaving bosoms and rippling abs; its bookish New Yorkers and a dozen-odd old people talking about their love lives. Ephron and Reiners love language pushed the envelope in 1989 in a way that seems rather tame now: As I grew up and began to dabble in romantic partnerships myself, When Harry Met Sally… felt like the rare option I wanted to emulate and embody, and I studied it like a textbook. In many ways, its a manual for romantic partnership—a funny, entertaining film thats closely attentive to the nuts and bolts of falling in love. Billy Crystal, director Rob Reiner, and Meg Ryan. Columbia Pictures/Everett Collection Still, I understand where my parents were coming from. Watching When Harry Met Sally… as an adult, it feels as if the movie spills some secrets that grown-ups arent supposed to share—about the messiness of attraction, the circuitous path of romance, the erotic tension in spirited antagonism. Its about how another person can become a part of you despite your best intentions. Behind the films wryly entertaining tone, theres a wild liveliness that animates the characters, a combination of deep-seated longings and carnal passions. Harry has to learn to confront his feelings. Sally has to learn to assert her orgasm. Ryan is translucent with her characters emotions, and Crystals never been as darkly alluring, or worn his facial hair better. They have the opposite of a meet-cute in the opening scene—a meet-hate. But Harry and Sallys mutual antipathy still fuels their curiosity about each other, extending their initial conversation into a years-long back-and-forth that becomes their lifelong partnership. The famous question that begins their charged, decade-long dance—the idea of sex—haunts their relationship for more than 10 years, shutting down intimacy, sparking their anger, and occasionally, making them dishonest. When they do have sex, it changes everything. The film is constructed around the idea of Harry and Sallys friendship—and their romance only progresses because they attempt to be friends. But by the end, their friendship succumbs to love; the sex thing, as Harry said from the start, never went away. Billy Crystal. Columbia Pictures/Everett Collection. Thirty years after it premiered, Im finally in the kind of romantic partnership the movie depicts. Im not entirely sure if studying the film has prepared me for this marriage, as I sort of hoped it would. But it was a little affirming, and a little painful, to watch the movie again and feel so close to its ups and downs—the push and pull of intimacy, the slow pace of personal growth. When Harry Met Sally… has served as this example I could keep in my pocket of what love should feel like—an endless, unspooling conversation with a partner who, like a counterweight, provides equilibrium. A postscript: My husband and I are going to be have a Hindu wedding ceremony later this summer, and in an effort to understand what were promising each other, I looked up the translations of the Sanskrit vows. Amusingly, the bride and groom are charged to love one another as friends, even as they explicitly vow to maintain an active sex life. (Other vows: fidelity, mutual support, rights to livestock. Sex doesnt seem to diminish the friendship, but rather to enhance it—and it seems as if thats the hidden postscript of When Harry Met Sally…, lurking under its sexy, rated-R veneer. Perhaps some men and some women cant just be friends. But spouses better be friends already. Celebrities Whove Turned Their Divorces into Art By Ron Galella/WireImage/Getty Images Nora Ephron The late writers first novel, Heartburn, published in 1983, was the exact application of her own advice (recounted in the HBO biographical documentary Everything Is Copy) to “become the heroine rather than the victim of the joke. ” In Heartburn, which was later adapted into a film starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, Ephron wrote about the funniest, saddest, and most jarring parts of her divorce from renowned Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein. In the documentary, late director Mike Nichols summarized Ephrons healing process: “She. cried for six months and wrote it funny. In writing it funny, she won. ”.

I am so disappointed that I paid for the movie and I wasn't allowed to watch it on remote screen and not on the laptop. At least youtube should disclose it before charging people. When harry met sally soundtrack. When harry met sally... music from the motion picture harry connick jr. album.

Writed by: Beniamino Barrese

2019

Genres: Documentary

Brief: Benedetta wants to disappear. An iconic fashion model in the 1960s, she became a muse to Warhol, Dali, Penn and Avedon. As a radical feminist in the 1970s, she fought for the rights and emancipation of women. But at the age of 75, she becomes fed up with all the roles that life has imposed upon her and decides to leave everything and everybody behind, to disappear to a place as far as possible from the world she knows. Hiding behind the camera, her son Beniamino witnesses her journey. Having filmed her since he was a child in spite of all her resistance, he now wants to make a film about her, to keep her close for as long as possible - or, at least, as long as his camera keeps running. The making of the film turns into a battle between mother and son, a stubborn fight to capture the ultimate image of Benedetta - the image of her liberation

Non conoscevo questa vicenda. Non conoscevo l'esistenza di questa intervista. Raccapricciante. Soprattutto, raccapricciante il modo in cui Montanelli lo racconta, come stesse narrando un fatto di lieve entità, un aneddoto di guerra, con fare ilare, come se tutto sia stato naturale e lecito. Like a boss film. Like a boss movie. Like a boss compilation awesome. Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish play business partners threatened by a cosmetics titan (Salma Hayek) in Miguel Arteta's comedy. Two besties who have always been able to mix business and friendship finally see their bond threatened in Miguel Arteta's Like a Boss, a lightweight but often likeable comedy setting the unexpectedly well-matched Rose Byrne and Tiffany Haddish up against a brassy Salma Hayek. Having earned some praise for her performance in Arteta's Beatriz at Dinner, Hayek is a letdown here, steered toward broad villainy and cartoonish physicality that exist in a world apart from the credible sharpness of her co-stars. Quite funny for much of its running time, the film feels like it simply runs out of steam in its third act, settling for a lazy, pandering resolution and seeming happy to have made it to the 83-minute finish line. Those who have marveled at Haddish and Byrne in some of their previous supporting roles are left waiting for each to get a bona-fide starring vehicle, but this team-up gives each more room to shine than usual. Mia (Haddish) and Mel (Byrne) have been inseparable since middle school, the latter being taken in by Mia's family when her mother ran afoul of the law. Now housemates, they run a small but well-liked cosmetics shop that bears their names. They mix their own formulas, package them into gimmicky gift packs like a "One-Night Stand Kit" a hit, we're told) and employ two of the kind of colorful characters typically seen only in rom-coms: Haughty Barrett, played to the hilt by Emmy-winning  Pose star Billy Porter; and Jennifer Coolidge's Sydney, whose dialogue strains for the kind of outrageous cluelessness Coolidge has specialized in for 20 years. Mia's the creative one; Mel keeps the books in order. Or tries to: She's been protecting Mia from the knowledge that their business is nearly half a million dollars in debt, and something needs to change soon. Enter Josh (Karan Soni) the snippy yes-man to makeup magnate Claire Luna (Hayek. Josh summons the partners to a meeting, where Luna offers to pay all their debts in return for a 51 percent stake in the business. When Mia balks at selling what the two have built, they settle on a compromise: Luna will take 49 percent, only getting a majority in the unlikely event — how could such a thing ever happen? — that Mia and Mel end their partnership. Before the women are even in the parking lot, the viperish Luna is plotting ways to make them hate each other. She does that by wowing Mel with her business acumen (Mia couldn't be less impressed) and forcing the partners to doubt their values. When M&M come up with a new line whose marketing will revolve around supportive friendships and inner beauty, Luna insists they focus on what their industry is really about: Inspire the ugly people to buy their way into gorgeousness. By way of example, she introduces two men whose own line of products — named "Get Some" — are so baldly misogynistic they can hardly even be useful as satire. Given her success in her field, Luna has an odd approach to her own appearance. Especially in her first scene, the contrast between skin coloring, dyed hair and orange dress screams out for a makeover. (In one of Sydney's good lines, she disses her as "the angry carrot. But she's excellent at sowing discord, and soon the friends are on edge. Unfortunately, everyone involved seems to understand that this movie only crackles when Haddish and Byrne are feeding off each other's energy — even when that means that Mia is coolly trying to push the women past an obstacle that Mel, trying hard to please everyone, doesn't yet see. So Boss truncates the conflict: We get one extended bit of physical comedy in which Mel sabotages Mia, followed by a scene in which they publicly blow up at each other. Once they've called it quits on their relationship, the movie blazes through a trio of mini-scenes in which friends urge them to reconsider. Few rom-coms have ever been this eager to push their stars back together, and it happens here with no friction at all. The less said about the sequence in which they publicly go up against Claire Luna, the better. It's implausible in just about every respect, down to the new product they introduce at a gala Luna hosts. Their invention doesn't seem like the stroke of genius the pic suggests it is, as it doesn't look at all conducive to the way women actually use cosmetics. Not being a makeup consumer, I can't say that with authority, and neither, I suspect, can screenwriters Adam Cole-Kelly and Sam Pitman. But Byrne and Haddish sell it like believers, and the movie immediately leaps forward to imagine a future for the characters in which "like a boss" means something other than "like an arrogant tool of the system, bending others to your will. It probably wouldn't surprise anyone to read that according to the World Drug Report 2016, one in 20 adults used at least one illegal drug in 2014. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime researchers also reported that globally, 29million people are dependent on drugs. They also found gender differences within drug use too - men are three times more likely than women to use cannabis, cocaine or amphetamines. But something that hasn't really been looked into before is how deeply drug dependency can impact on relationships. New research from looked at people who'd experienced drug abuse first hand to see how damaging the effects had been on their partners. It was found that everyone's happiness in a relationship declined as their frequency of drug use increased - while people whose partners occasionally used drugs cited their happiness as between 7-8 on the scale, for women who were with someone who constantly used drugs it fell to a 3. More than half (56% of respondents said they wouldn't remain in a relationship with someone who was suffering from substance abuse, but leaving a partner over their drug use is rarely simple. Cosmopolitan UK spoke to 26-year-old Sarah* who, for a number of years, had no idea her boyfriend was battling a secret drug addiction. "My boyfriend was a secret drug addict" I was 18 going on 19 when I met Liam* at the warehouse party where he was DJing. He bought me a drink and was super sweet, and we were into the same music. He was also really smart and we just hit it off. We were living and studying in different states, so our relationship was long distance for months. But we had such a great rapport that we decided to keep it going. I'd travel to see him every two months or so because I had family where he was anyway, it was basically like going home. When I did see Liam, drugs were usually involved. He always DJed at the weekends so we went out a lot - we'd have some drinks, use typical club drugs and smoke some weed. It never occurred to me that his drug use was anything more than occasional. Getty After we'd been together for a year, when I was about 20, he graduated and decided to move back up north with my while I finished college. He was used to DJing massive clubs every weekend and now, we lived in a small town and there was nowhere to go out. I think he got really restless. That's when I first noticed that he drank a lot. like, getting drunk basically every night. Hed go through a bottle of wine on his own every day. I thought that was really weird. When we moved to Spain together just after my graduation, it really hit me. He was in his element with his job, and I realised drugs were a daily thing for him. There was always an excuse to take drugs and soon it became a daily thing to pop a pill, or grab a baggy and go out. I didnt always want to party, but he'd pressure me to. Then we'd get into horrific arguments which our roommates overheard through our thin apartment walls. I slowly began to realise I was moulding my life to fit his. Trying to talk to him about his drug use just resulted in him getting so nasty that I had no choice but to back off. As well as being defensive, he'd bring things that I apparently did into it. Liam would say, Well you love to go out and I provide that. Id end up feeling guilty and he'd storm out. Looking back, he was very much a manipulative person. In the bedroom He became very physically aggressive and he'd make me do things I just wasn't comfortable with. He started using drugs and booze to make me more open to trying things I didnt want to in the bedroom. I was thinking, Oh my god, this is not OK. And as time went on, our sex was either very aggressive or we didn't have sex at all. I ended up finding all these night jobs to avoid going home. I was afraid. Believing certain jobs were "below" him, I'd have to bartend in these sleazy bars that I hated so much just to make enough money for us. Meanwhile, he was out partying and using the excuse that he was 'networking' to go to clubs and take copious amounts of drugs. It was a bizarre situation, but I was just stuck in the cycle. Trying to break free, I started trying to go my own way with new friends and our roommates. This just made him angry and mistrusting. MirageC I'd be doing laundry and find empty baggies in his pockets, which was evidence he was doing a lot more drugs than he said he was. Liam would come home and say he just drank that night, or just took "one little pill. He'd either shrug it off when I asked, or get mad and tell me it wasnt my business. And he was still getting physically aggressive at home - I dont know why I stayed so long. After we moved back to the U. S., we were having a huge argument and it came out that he was thousands of dollars in debt. It was completely unexplained because his parents had paid off his tuition fees. I dont know if he was using any drugs other than ecstasy and weed, but surely you cant go through that many thousands of dollars on just ecstasy and weed? As his addiction worsened, he developed a habit of not showering. We'd fight about that and by this time, he disgusted me. Shortly after in 2014, I found him on Tinder, and finally was like, fuck this. I dont know why, but it really knocked it into my head. By that point I was ready to leave and had seen who he really was. Getting my confidence back In hindsight, I realise that he was abusive. Ive had to go through counselling to help me deal with that. I also don't think I ever knew the sober Liam. I do think addiction can affect the person the addict is in the relationship with more. He was highly functional in his life, but his behaviour really broke me down and held me back. The aggression he'd take out on me meant it took a lot for me to gain my confidence back. "His behaviour really broke me down and held me back" A lot of people in that situation don't realise how poisonous it is, to them. I certainly didnt. To have to carry that energy around in your relationship or home is unhealthy and something thats going to halt your growth as a person. If I could give any advice to women in the same situation, it would be: get out. If the signs are there and youre starting to wonder, thats a problem. Theres probably a lot more going on that you dont see. I stayed for like a year and a half more than I should have. As soon as the relationship ended, I knew it was the right decision. It was like this weight Id been carrying around for so long had lifted. That was four years ago now. I recently moved in with my boyfriend of two years and hes completely sober. He's showed me how you should be treated in a relationship. *Names have been changed “If a loved one has problems with drugs or alcohol then Addaction is here for you.
